The days are getting shorter and the air is getting crisp and thoughts of trains fill our heads. We recall fond memories of a train circling the tree, chugging and smoking its way into our hearts. The scent of smoke rekindles the love and fascination we had as children. We may wish to recreate this atmosphere for youngsters who come to visit or for our children (or just for our own enjoyment). It's the time of year when train shows are popping up all around. They can be a good place to get ideas and maybe purchase that extra item to complete your holiday train setup.
This is also the best time of year to think about your train set and check it out to see that it is running correctly. Waiting until the last minute to set it up can be a source of disappointment if it does not run. It is wise to check it now so there is time to get it in good shape before the holidays.
Some common causes for a train failing to run include:
Breakage from unprotected storage or mishandling
Corrosion of electrical contacts
Corrosion of mechanical parts
Lubricant solidification
Dirt in the mechanism
Dirty track and/or wheels
Cracking and Dry rot of wire casings
With the exception of severe corrosion and breakage most of these issues can be resolved with a bit of cleaning and lubrication. Running locomotives with any of these issues can cause further damage that may not be so easily remedied.
So how do we go about checking out our trains before turning them on? The first step is to unpack the train, taking care to preserve the packaging for later storage after the holidays. Next, we inspect the components of the train set:
Transformer:
Check plug and cord for damage (Cord must be replaced if bare wire is exposed)
Clean all exposed surfaces with a damp rag. Use a dilute amount of mild detergent if needed. (make sure all surfaces are completely dry before plugging in the transformer)
Check switches and control knob to make sure that they work smoothly.
Check the power connections. Verify the lugs or screw connectors are all present and in good condition.
Plug in transformer and verify the power light illuminates.
Verify that power connection to track is in good condition
If there are any of these items is not working correctly, take the transformer to your local hobby shop for service or replacement.
Locomotive:
Inspect the locomotive that all components are properly attached. Repair any loose items (e.g. railings, ladders, horns, trim pieces, etc.)
Gently clean the surface of the shell using a soft cloth or soft bristle brush to remove accumulated dust and dirt.
Inspect the wheels
check that they are firmly attached.
nonpowered wheels should rotate freely
powered wheels should be tight
check that the truck frames are firmly attached to the trucks
Check that the trucks swivel easily
Clean the wheels using a cotton swab to remove any gunk or dirt accumulation. A small amount of alcohol may be used, but be careful not to get it on plastic parts which may be damaged.
Check couplers for damage a proper operation
lubricate per manufacturers recommendation
Test engine on a section of clean powered track; forward, reverse, and check that lights and smoker are working, if present.
If appropriate take engine to a qualified repair station.
Track:
Inspect each section of track
verify that the rails are attached and not bent or distorted
verify that rail joiners are present and in good condition (replacement joiners are available if needed)
Check power connector or powered track section as appropriate. Make sure the wires and clips attach correctly
Any damaged rail sections should be discarded and replaced
Check for corrosion on rail surface. Depending on the degree of corrosion, rail may be cleaned using an abbrasive or may need replacement
Clean the rail surface with track cleaner
Rolling Stock:
Check for damage and reattach any loose parts.
Check couplers trucks and wheels for smooth operation
clean wheels of any accumulated gunk
test roll each car on clean track
operating cars should have wheels and electrical pickups cleaned and the control buttons checked. Each car should be tested for proper operation
This may seem like a lot, but it does not take long. It pays dividends by finding issues early when they can often be fixed easily and by preventing disappointment at the holidays when you expect them to be running. In event, your local hobby shop can be your best resource to rectify any issues and get you up and running for the perfect holiday display.
Proper storage and maintenance are key to reliability in toy and model trains. Keep original packaging for reuse after the holidays and repack trains in it if possible. If the orginal packaging is gone, then wrap each piece individually in paper or bubble wrap and place in a sturdy box or container so that there is no direct contact between pieces.
As always we at CB Train Junction are here to help. Write or call with any questions. Bring your set by the shop for an estimate on repairs or service you may need; but do it soon; the holidays will be here before you know it.
